Howick & Districts Historical Society has received a grant to help provide baby changing tables, making the area's popular attraction more family friendly.

Sports clubs and cultural groups were the main beneficiaries of Howick Local Board’s December quick response grants fund.

Board chair Damian Light says more than $30,000 worth of grants were made.

“Some good groups have missed out as we focus our reduced budget on local groups that haven’t applied for grants this financial year to help spread the impact.

“We’re proud to be able to provide support to important sports groups in our community, including the Howick Sailing Club, which needed help to purchase tires for the tractor used to launch yachts.

“There was also support for football, athletics and a small grant to help local netball with its plans for grandstand refurbishments.”

Cultural groups were also supported, including the Botany Chinese Association, Mission Heights Junior College’s kapa haka groups, the NZ-Korea Association and the KiwiOra Trust.

Light says the KiwiOra Trust is planning a furoshiki workshop, keeping alive the Japanese art of making colourful carry bags – traditionally for clothes but now to avoid plastic bags.

“And we’ve also been able to make a grant to the Howick & Districts Historical Society for baby changing tables. We want out young families to be able to visit the fabulous historical living village without having to worry about how they are going to change new arrivals.”
