Avondale’s budding sports stars have received a major boost after a funding award to maintain and improve the operation of local facilities.
Avondale College has received a $120,000 sports and recreation operational grant, consisting of $40,000 a year for the next three years.
The grant will ensure the day-to-day operations of the College’s sports facilities can be sustained and improved.
The College facilities are available for community access, providing wider community benefit and access to sporting opportunities.
Whau Councillor Kerrin Leoni says that the grant reflects Auckland Council’s commitment to invest in local, non-council owned sports facilities.
“With the Olympics wrapped up and the Paralympics up next, we’ve seen sport amplified on a global stage. Through these events we can see the benefit of investing in sports facilities to increase opportunities for participation in sports.
“We want our local rangatahi to have opportunities to participate in sports at all levels, and the entire Avondale College community will benefit from the ongoing operation of their facilities.
“From hobby sports right up to budding Olympians, every young person that wants to participate should have the opportunity offered to them.
“With many of the Avondale College facilities available for community access, this is a great win for the West.”
The funding comes through the Sport and Recreation Facilities Operating Grant approved by Auckland Council’s Planning, Environment and Parks Committee.
Fifteen sports organisations across Tāmaki Makaurau will receive a share of $3.2 million over the next three years.
