You may not be able to see it, but you will soon feel a breath of fresh air in the main pool hall at West Wave in Henderson.
A major upgrade is happening behind the scenes, with a renewal of the centre’s 36-year-old lungs, its ventilation and air conditioning system, underway.
The upgraded ventilation system will help to regulate the temperature in the pool hall, providing a better space for pool users and an improved working environment for staff.
It’s part of the ongoing $14.9 million renewal of the much-loved Pool and Leisure Centre that has been underway since 2017.
This phase of the work, totaling $3.4 million, is funded largely by the Henderson-Massey Local Board.
“West Wave is a cherished and well-used community facility,” says Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter.
“We are pleased to be able to fund this renewal, which will provide a more relaxed and pleasant environment for current and future pool users to enjoy.”
Of the $3.4 million total, $370,000 is funded from the Central Risk Fund (CRF) for seismic renewal, $176,000 comes from the Energy Efficiency & Sustainability fund, and the balance is funded through the Henderson-Massey Local Board customer and community services work programme.
The Energy Efficiency & Sustainability funding will provide a heat reclaim system, which captures excess heat and repurposes it, to improve sustainability measures by reducing energy usage. A similar system was previously installed in 1988, but later became unused.
The ventilation renewal is set to be completed in March 2025. Work in public areas will be conducted after-hours, so there is no anticipated disruption to services.
