Greenhithe’s Wainoni Park in the Upper Harbour Local Board area has won the coveted Green Flag award, an internationally recognised quality mark for parks and green spaces.
The Green Flag Award scheme evaluates parks based on criteria such as service quality, safety, maintenance, community involvement and sustainability.
Chair Anna Atkinson is delighted that the park has been recognised and community’s efforts rewarded in this way.
”Wainoni Park is such a beautiful park and peaceful oasis. The park is much loved by our Greenhithe community, and this award is a testament to the hard work that goes into looking after it by the community and council staff.
“There are many community groups involved including Friends of Wainoni Park who are restoring the stream through riparian planting, controlling pest plants and looking after the edible garden.
“Tauhinu Sea Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh participants carry out pest trapping, Greenhithe School undertakes planting, and Gardens for Health help look after the garden.
“The groups are supported by the Greenhithe Community Trust, and together they protect and enhance the biodiversity and natural beauty of the park.”
Friends of Wainoni Park toured with the judges; sharing the deep connection that the community has with the park and showcasing the incredible work of the many volunteers.
The judges were impressed with the arched metalwork entrance, cleanliness, a sense of safety and volunteer input.
Atkinson says, “On behalf of the local board and our community, I’d like to congratulate and thank those who tirelessly work to ensure our parks are well cared for.”
Wainoni Park is located in Churchouse Road Greenhithe, and offers incredible views, a green escape with sports field, a playground, toilets and changing rooms, water play area, car park (with mobility parking), cricket nets and pitches, drinking fountains and a resident pony club. The stream has been restored and there are edible gardens, fruit trees and shaded picnic spots.
Several walking tracks pass through the park including the Greenhithe to Wharf Path and the Greenhithe East Path.
