Fitness fanatics will be thrilled with the news that Marina Fitness in Half Moon Bay will have its lease renewed by Howick Local Board for at least another three years.
Marina Fitness has been part of the community since 2009, with the lease due to expire on 16 August 2025.
It offers locals a high-quality fitness centre right by the water and is the only council-run fitness facility in the area that isn’t in a council-owned building.
Board chair Damian Light says, “We’re proud of the mahi of the Marina Fitness staff ensuring locals remain healthy and active. This dedication to the local community was reflected in the strong public support for the continuation of the service. Together with the solid financial results, it’s clear that this service is needed in our community.”
More than 750 people are active members of Marina Fitness, and visits have been growing steadily — up 14% compared to the same time last year. People love the service, with 97% customer satisfaction and a high number of regular users.
The nearest fitness centre is 2.5km away, and with the lease due to end on 16 August, at the boards May business meeting council staff presented three options to the board: renew the lease, look at outsourcing, or not renew it.
Before the decision was made, the board heard and saw the significant community support for the extension of the lease, with more than 50 people attending to show their support.
In addition to the extension, the board also asked staff to explore a six-year lease.
Marina Fitness will now continue to operate under Auckland Council for the next three years — giving certainty to members and staff and helping keep a much-loved local fitness option available in the community.
