Mother’s Day is beautiful - but also deeply painful for those grieving the loss of a mum, a daughter, a sister, or a friend.
This year in Papatoetoe, the community came together to gently hold space for that grief and to honour the women and girls who live on in their hearts.

With support from the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board Isn’t She Lovely - organised by Good Grief South Auckland and held at Presbyterian St Martins parish in Papatoetoe, offered more than just an event.
Isn’t She Lovely is a powerful, heartfelt reminder that love doesn’t end, and no one should have to grieve alone.
Board Chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia was present at the event and shared his support for the kaupapa.
“With the busyness of life, it's great the Church provided some time and space for us to pause, and reflect on our loved ones, the important females in our lives, especially those who have passed on. The event had a multitude of ways for members of the public to express their appreciation and grief. In our diverse communities, commemorating our loved ones is a universal emotion that can bring us together,” says Apulu.
This unique gathering brought together 80 participants, created as a safe and creative space for people to connect.
It’s part of the local board’s community connection initiative, which brings people together through local spaces, including faith-based places.
In Ōtara, 52 streets now have local champions leading grassroots engagement. In Papatoetoe, a different approach has taken shape - activating faith-based spaces like churches to host meaningful events that foster connection and community.
The event attracted more than 50 attendees from various ethnic groups and featured a range of thoughtful and engaging activities:
Creche area for the kids, allowing parents and caregivers time to reflect and participate.
“She Is Music to Me” drink station, where guests grabbed an ice-cold beverage and played their loved one’s favourite song.
Sip & Paint – each person painted something meaningful to remember someone close to their heart.

Domino Corner – a space to challenge someone to a friendly game of dominos and share stories.

Prayer Room – a peaceful space for quiet reflection or personal prayer.
Say Her Name – an open moment for people to introduce their loved one, share her story, and tell the world one unforgettable thing about her.
Legacy Tree & Photo Wall – where guests could add a photo or message in memory of someone special.

Bead Making – a hands-on activity to create a keepsake in honour of a loved one.

Light refreshments and snacks were also available throughout the event.

By supporting community-led events like this, the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board continues its commitment to promoting wellbeing, connection, and resilience across South Auckland.
Isn’t She Lovely was a beautiful reminder of the power of collective healing - and why spaces like these, matter.
