Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board invests over $40m for 2025/2026

  • The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board’s has adopted its 25/26 agreement and allocated $42.2m for the financial year.
  • Key priorities include investment into youth empowerment, Māori and Pacific communities, improving community facilities and local parks and reserves.
  • Some of the upgrades include the Dunkirk Road Activity Centre, Kai Resilience programme and the return of popular events.

Community programmes, youth engagement, events and new placemaking are some of the highlights of the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board’s plans for this financial year. 

Adopted by the board in June, the local board agreement sets out a total investment of $42.2 million and key funding priorities for the financial year 2025-2026. 

Wide range of projects covered in comprehensive funding allocation 

Through Fairer Funding, Maungakiekie-Tāmaki local board has received an increase of $800,000 in operating funding and $2.58 million in capital funding for the 2025/2026 financial year. 

Fairer funding provides an additional $35 million of operating funding and $33 million of capital funding to be allocated to eligible local boards in 2025/2026.  

Chair Maria Meredith is proud of the work programme that covers a wide-range of projects for the board. 

“For residents of Maungakiekie-Tamaki the additional funding available from fairer funding is great for the community, as it allows us to invest more into community projects. 
“It’s fantastic to adopt our work programme, and we’ve got diverse and exciting portfolio of work lined up, that covers the critical maintenance of our much-loved local board area as well as other community-focuses outcomes.” 

Key projects include: 

  • Dunkirk Road Activity Centre: Activation of this community-led venue. Enable and co-ordinate a wide range of activities that cater to the diversity of the local community. 
  • Placemaking: Deliver a programme of activity focused on neighbourhood development, active participation, improving outcomes for Māori and Pacific communities. 
  • Youth empowerment Maungakiekie-Tāmaki: Building on the success of the participatory grant-making pilot. 
  • Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Play Plan 2025 Implementation: deliver new play projects such as utilising shared spaced with play implementation  
  • Matariki Light Trail – return of the popular light trail event in Glen Innes. 
  • Kai Resilience – Increasing access to fresh kai and improving knowledge of food growing. 
  • Review Te Oro strategic business plan –refresh of the Strategic Facility Plan to assess if Te Oro is best serving the community. 

The board’s agreement will soon be online on the Auckland Council website.
