Glen Innes’ Elstree North Reserve is in line for a revamp – with a number of improvements set to unlock the well-used space.

The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has invested $717,000 into the neighbourhood park to enable a play space for children of all ages, active equipment for adults, as well as and an improved flow through the park with new amenities.

Elstree North Reserve is one of several reserves which sits within the Ōmaru Creek catchment that will be upgraded as part of the Tāmaki Regeneration programme.

Auckland Council Area Operations Manager Marcel Morgan says the upgrades will provide a much-improved experience for the community.

“We’re excited to move forward with this project, and head towards construction at the end of this year for the Elstree North Reserve upgrades.
“It’s been a really thorough process to land on a design to suit the community, we’re proud of the process, and especially the commitment and input from our local schools and Ngai Tai ki Tamaki and Ngati Paoa.”

Design features set to sparkle

The new-look reserve will feature a number of enhancements, including:

  • Separate playground areas for  young children and teenagers, while making use of much of the existing playground infrastructure.
  • A new active recreation hub with outdoor exercise equipment and a volleyball net, all beside a refreshed basketball court.
  • New path connecting through the reserve from Laybourne Reserve.
  • Benches and picnic sets.

Engagement with local schools

Elstree North Reserve is situated close to two schools, and the project team worked with local schools Tamaki College and Glenbrae School

This included a workshop with Tamaki College students, in conjunction with Ngai Tai ki Tamaki and Ngati Paoa, at the school’s marae, with the allowed for key input into the design.

Glenbrae School also were involved, ensuring the new-look reserve would serve the needs of the youth that frequently use it.

When does the mahi start and finish?

Construction will start in December 2025, with an expected completion date of
mid-2026.
