After 24 years of dedicated service to West Auckland, Henderson-Massey Local Board Member Brenda Brady is stepping down, leaving behind a legacy of environmental stewardship, community advocacy, and supporting local infrastructure development.

Brenda has served five terms (15 years) on the Henderson-Massey Local Board, nine years with the former Waitākere City: six years as a city councillor and three on the old Henderson Community Board.

Championing housing for older people

One of Brenda’s proudest achievements was helping to initiate the Wilsher Village Older Peoples Housing redevelopment on Henderson Valley Road during her time with the former Waitākere City.

“The team had to hang onto that project when Auckland Council was formed in 2010,” she says.

“After 25 years, I cried when the wonderful Opanuku Village was finally opened in Henderson in 2019.”

The housing development, alongside the village, has created a vibrant community again – all within walking distance of the Henderson town centre.

Building inclusive local infrastructure

Brenda has also been a passionate advocate for inclusive community spaces. In the mid-1990s, she worked with parks staff and the Henderson Community Board to build the Hart Domain playground – one of the first in the area designed for children with disabilities.

The playground includes a liberty swing for children who use wheelchairs – a rare feature even today.

“It’s lovely to see that after 30 years, the playground is still busy,” she says.

Brenda was also closely involved with the Oratia Stream project, which evolved into the well-known Project Twin Streams – a transformative environmental and stormwater initiative across West Auckland.

Looking to the future

After more than two decades of service, Brenda says it’s time to make way for the next generation of leaders.

“The west is a beautiful place filled with strong and caring people. Many may not have much to spare, but they give back through kindness, connection, and community spirit. That’s what makes us Westies proud.”
A tribute from the chair

Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter paid tribute to Brenda’s long-standing service and commitment.

“Brenda has made enormous contribution in her long service to our West Auckland community. I wish Brenda well in her retirement and thank her once again for her service to our community.”
