What’s new at Mayfield Park? More courts, more paths, and more space to connect!
Thanks to a $455,000 upgrade funded by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, the space now features practical paths, courts, and facilities - creating a safer, more accessible, and vibrant hub that supports a healthier, more active Ōtara / East Tāmaki community.
These upgrades are putting the open space at Mayfield Park - to great use with new additions:

Basketball court: a half basketball court perfect for tamariki/children, rangatahi/youth, or grown-ups who love to ball
Volleyball court: (you’ll need your own net/ball) ideal for casual games or full-blown showdowns
New smooth looped pathways: alongside new standard-width footpaths, the addition of 186 metres of widened 2000mm footpaths is a major improvement that supports safer and easier movement around the park for everyone, whether that be a wheelchair, pram, mobility scooter, or bikes.
Now there’s room for nan and mokopuna to stroll together, mum and bubs, or for cousins to scooter side by side after school. What’s more, the widened path forms part of a looped path around the park that connects to wider shared pathways, linking the park with nearby reserves, schools, and public transport hubs like the Mayfield Park bus stop.
Keeping the park neat and tidy: 30 bollards - short vertical posts that stop motorcycles from driving through, with a mowing strip (a border to make lawn maintenance easier), and one chicane with a concrete pad (zigzag barrier to slow bikes), keeping the park safer.
The value of fixing up our infrastructure
As Ōtara grows, so does the need for quality spaces that reflect and support the people who live here, whether you’ve just arrived or have called this place home for decades.
Shared responsibility
The local board is proud to back these upgrades, but they only work if we all do our part. Look after the space, report any damage, and use it with care so it can serve the community for years to come. It’s the good stuff, and it’s well deserved, but it only stays that way if we treat it like it matters.
