Flood resilience work is set to ramp up in Kumeū, with Yakka Contracting appointed to deliver essential flood maintenance across the area.
It follows a tender process that ran from July to August, and means Yakka, who have strong civil works expertise, including stormwater maintenance, drainage improvements and erosion control, will undertake works in the area on behalf of council.
This is the only contract of its kind in Auckland that proactively protects a local township using a locally sourced contractor.
Local contractor
The decision demonstrates council’s commitment to involve locals who know the area and understand its unique challenges.
Cr Greg Sayers welcomed the announcement, saying “Local knowledge makes a real difference. By engaging a contractor who knows the area, they can deliver faster, safer outcomes for the community.”
The works will be above and beyond standard council maintenance, and include clearing vegetation, cleaning culverts, removing debris from land drains, channels and streams, and carrying out general maintenance to keep the stormwater system operating efficiently.
Rodney Local Board Chair Guy Wishart says “Flood resilience is a top priority for our communities and these works are a practical step forward. It is about protecting homes, businesses, and infrastructure.”
The programme forms part of the council’s Making Space for Water programme, helping reduce flood risk and keep communities safe.
Keeping the river free from blockages is an important part of reducing flood risk in the community. If you see a potential blockage, damage to stormwater assets or flooding, please report it to council as soon as possible by calling 09 301 0101.
