Community Playground Opening

“Kimpton Park is amazing and looks great” - a sentiment shared by many local families now enjoying the newly upgraded playground at Toetoe-nui / Kimpton Park in Papatoetoe.

Papatoetoe families are buzzing with excitement as the renewed playground at Toetoe-nui / Kimpton Park is open. The $400,000 revamp, funded by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, turns it into a vibrant, accessible hub for play, sports, and family time.

Councillor Lotu Fuli says, “I am proud of the way that the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board has listened to the community, and this is not the first time. They've done it several times when they've been renewing and upgrading the playgrounds.”

Following a 2024 community consultation, residents chose a design that delivered exactly what the neighbourhood wanted: a mix of open spaces, play structures, and sports areas.

Local parent Tim Maifeleni shared, “The old playground was from the ’90s and really needed an upgrade. This is exactly what we asked for. It’s brilliant to see the local board listen to the community.”

Families can enjoy:

  • swings, climbing modules, a tunnel, small slide, talking tubes, a space net, and even a ‘dancing snake’ balancing trail
  • a volleyball court
  • there’s room for a game of kick-a-ball or just chilling on the lawn
  • new pathways will make it easier to get around
  • rubbish bins will help keep it tidy
  • bring your kai/food - there are picnic tables and seating so you can relax and enjoy
  • there is no lighting at the playground, helping keep the park safe and peaceful after dark.

The recent community celebration featured a blessing from local kaumatua Chris Pomare, free sausage sizzle, fruits and family-friendly entertainment.

With entrances from Kimpton Road and Cornwall Road, children can climb, swing, slide, and explore, while families relax, picnic, and enjoy quality time outdoors.
