Walter Massey Park has officially been transformed, giving the local club - the Māngere East Hawks, and the wider community a facility to be proud of.
The completed upgrades to the rugby league fields represent a major investment in local sport and community wellbeing.
The park now includes:
- a new walkway connecting all fields
- 12 high-quality LED sports lighting across all three fields
- upgraded sand-based playing surfaces on Fields 1, 2 and 3 making the space safer, more resilient, and ready for year-round use
- along with new irrigation and drainage systems
- new footpaths and fencing
- and improved car parking facilities.
These improvements support longer training hours, more games, and increased participation, particularly during the busy winter season. For a community where rugby league is a key part of local identity, the upgrade marks an important step forward.
Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board Chair Kaea Walter Inoke-Togiamua says, “the project is a strong example of collaboration between Auckland Council, contractors, the Māngere East Hawks Rugby League Club, and our local board, responding to a long-standing need for more lit sports field capacity and creating a safer, more accessible space for the community.
“Improving this local sports park is great news for the whole community. It increases capacity for teams and park goers, supports local clubs to grow, and enhances shared public space - making it a lasting asset for health, participation, and community wellbeing.”
The project began in October 2025 and was completed in April 2026, with all fields fully line marked and ready for use ahead of the first game of the season on 25 April 2026.
Behind the scenes, early planning and coordination helped ensure the project stayed on track and within budget. New pathways and improved access also enhance the overall park experience, making it more welcoming and easier for everyone to enjoy.
Senior Project Manager Phil Gedge acknowledges the strong partnership throughout delivery, “I would like to sincerely thank the Māngere East Hawks club for their cooperation, patience, and positive engagement throughout the project, as well as the contractors, consultants, and council team for their professionalism and commitment.
"The upgrade builds on existing drainage and irrigation, improving the field surface and durability. As the fields bed in, careful management of use will be important to protect their long-term quality, with clubs working closely with council to maintain the best outcomes.”
Whether playing, coaching, supporting from the sidelines, or simply enjoying the space, the upgraded park offers something for the whole community.
