Sauniga o le ‘Ava Samoa: The ‘Ava Ceremony of Samoa, a new bilingual children’s picture book, launches ahead of Samoan Language Week, 31 May - 6 June.

Published by Auckland Council Libraries in partnership with Oratia Books, the Samoan and English language book introduces young readers to the ‘ava ceremony, a key cultural practice central to fa’asamoa (the Samoan way of life) and an important tradition for marking significant occasions. Samoan Language Week (Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa) is an annual celebration that honours heritage, culture and the third most spoken language in Aotearoa.

Auckland Council’s Head of Library and Learning Services, Catherine Leonard, highlights the importance of representation in the libraries’ collections.

“Our publishing programme at Auckland Libraries serves to fill gaps in our collections so we can ensure all Aucklanders have access to stories that reflect their communities and languages,” says Ms Leonard.

“We’re so lucky to live in the diverse city that is Tāmaki Makaurau. One of the ways we step up to celebrate this richness is through the publication of books like this one that gift us such beautiful insight into a wide range of cultures.”

Community Committee Chair Julie Fairey adds that when these stories are seen, read and heard, Tāmaki Makaurau is stronger for it.

“It’s great to see these stories published, reflecting and celebrating the wonderful diversity of Tāmaki Makaurau, and paving the way for a shared sense of belonging for all communities of our city,” says Councillor Fairey.

The book is illustrated by Hamilton-based Māori artist Ani Huia Ligaliga and written by respected teacher, orator and award-winning educator Tauanu’u Perenise Tapu Sitagata. Sauniga o le ‘Ava Samoa: The ‘Ava Ceremony of Samoa is his second publication following the success of Alagā’upu Fa’asamoa ma Uiga mo Tamaiti: Samoan Proverbs for Children, released in 2025. Mr Sitagata is also a recipient of the National Excellence in Teaching Award for his achievements in Samoan language education.
