Tucked away off the Southern Motorway with a quaint small-town vibe, this cosy corner of Auckland is bursting with hidden gems. Here’s just a selection: 

Get Your Culture Fix

Come pay a visit to Papakura Art Gallery and see what cool / trendy artwork from local artists are on display.

Start your stay-cay by exploring the local creative scene right in the heart of the township. First up is the Papakura Art Gallery, which showcases a fantastic mix of local and national artists in a beautiful, contemporary space inside a historic refurbished fire station. It’s free to visit and open to the public Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm.

Just a short stroll away, you can dive deep into the area's rich heritage and stories at the Papakura Museum, open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturdays 10am – 1pm, making it the perfect morning double-bill for culture lovers. And if you’re interested in researching your family history but don’t know where to begin, Papakura Museum even has an onsite genealogist to help, available by appointment.  

Stroll or cycle along the Inlet

Take a stroll through the local wetlands at Pahurehure Esplanade Path.

Once you’ve had your culture fix and some refreshments from the many food and drink outlets in Papakura’s town centre, you’ll be ready for some fresh air. Head over to the stunning Pāhurehure Esplanade Path for a refreshing 40-minute walk. This gorgeous 2.6km family-friendly walkway combines paved paths and scenic boardwalks right along the edge of the Pahurehure Inlet, as well as through some neighbouring suburban streets, so you get a real feel for this peaceful township. It is flat, buggy-friendly, and ideal for a leisurely afternoon wander or cycle. Even better, there are excellent parks and playgrounds at both ends - including the skate park and sports fields at Ray Small Park - making it a stellar spot to relax or enjoy a swing.

Be sustainable and connect with the community

Sustainable Papakura offers a range of events, workshops, a repair cafe and a market to help eco-lovers upskill, shop earth-friendly, and connect with talented local volunteers. At the repair cafe, held once a month, skilled repair volunteers will help you fix everything from clothing and bicycles to watches and small furniture. Bring along a broken treasure, learn a new skill, and connect with the lovely locals over a warm cuppa and genuinely good vibes. Escape into the wild – and experience a thriving Kōkako population

Pay close attention and you might see a Kōkako in the trees close to you.

No staycation in Papakura is complete without tapping into the spectacular wilderness sitting right on its doorstep. The mighty Hunua Ranges Regional Park [PDF 3.5MB] frames the skyline and offers an epic nature escape. Take a dramatic drive through the Hunua Gorge to stand before the breathtaking, 30-metre-high Hunua Falls. If you are feeling energetic, the park boasts a massive network of tramping tracks, dedicated mountain biking trails, and skills areas nestled within lush native forest. Keep your ears open for the beautiful, haunting call of the rare kōkako! Thanks to a huge conservation effort by Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation, mana whenua and volunteers, the Hunuas now boast over 400 breeding pairs of Kōkako. To stay safe, make sure you check for closures and weather conditions before you go.
