Mount Albert’s Chamberlain Park will be home to a new shared path, connecting with the North Western cycleway, as part of a wider suite of transport upgrades locked in for Albert-Eden for 2026-2029.
The new path will start at Rawalpindi Reserve, connecting Rawalpindi St to the North Western cycleway, and sits within an overall $3.25m package of transport projects covering a wide range of the local board area.
Albert-Eden Local Board chair Margi Watson says the 2026-2029 transport plan is comprehensive, with a clear focus on safer connections.
“We’ve locked in a significant amount of transport upgrades which are a great mix of safer pedestrian crossing as well as connecting cycleways, to ensure our community can move around safely, as well as have the option of walking or cycling along new paths."
“We’ve also managed to spread these investments out to different parts of Albert-Eden, with projects in Western Springs, St Lukes, Eden Terrace, Owairaka, Mt Eden and Waterview,” says Margi.
What are the projects in the 2026-2029 transport plan?

Western Springs to Sandringham cycle improvements: ($420K towards stages one and two of a cross-town cycleway starting near the North-Western cycleway).

Essex Road car park availability sign ($100K): new electronic car park space availability sign near the intersection of Mt Eden Road and Essex Road.

Hallam Street pedestrian improvements ($250K): refuge island and one speed hump on Hallam Street to support students walking to school.

St Lukes /Wagner Road active modes ($500K): new missing pedestrian crossings on eastern leg of crossing, cycling improvements and other minor changes.

Mt Eden Road rail overpass pedestrian safety improvements ($100K) Improve safety with pedestrian fencing and awning allowing for shaded waiting places.
All projects are expected to be delivered in the 2026-2029 timeframe.
Chamberlain Park upgrades in the masterplan
The new Chamberlain Park shared path forms part of a wider set of proposed upgrades for Chamberlain Park, under the proposed Chamberlain Park concept plan.
Firstly, the golf holes need to be realigned (all 18 holes remain) to enable the development of the new neighbourhood park on the western side of the awa.
Following the realignment, future work such as a new park, playground, wetland improvements and the shared path can be built.
There will be full public consultation and stakeholder engagement on the concept plan before the work proceeds.
