Three community sport and recreation projects will receive $270,000 in funding from the Albert-Eden Local Board, unlocking local facilities and creating new community opportunities for sport and recreation.
The funding will support upgrades to a bowling facility, a feasibility study for a new multi-purpose community facility, and planning for covered sports courts that could benefit a range of indoor sports.
Albert-Eden Local Board Chair Margi Watson says the funding reflects the board's commitment to community access to sport and recreation facilities.
“There’s no shortage of positive benefits of providing sport and recreation facilities in Albert-Eden, as they bring people together, support healthy lifestyles and strengthen community connections. We are pleased we can play a role in supporting schools and sports clubs to thrive,” says Margi.
The investment forms part of the implementation of the Albert-Eden Sport and Active Recreation Facilities Plan.
Planning for the future: school investments for Epsom
Funding was also approved for two projects added to the Albert-Eden Sport and Active Recreation Facilities Plan.
What is being funded?
$60,000 to Epsom Normal Primary School: to investigate a multipurpose indoor facility that could include community access.
$150,000 for Epsom Girls Grammar School: supporting planning and technical assessment work for a covered court canopy over the existing outdoor courts.
The Epsom Normal Primary School project will explore options for a facility that could be used by both the school and the wider community.
At Epsom Girls Grammar School, the covered courts project has been identified as the preferred option through a council assessment of potential covered-court locations across Albert-Eden. The facility could support sports such as basketball, volleyball, futsal and pickleball outside school hours.
Bowls upgrades for Mount Albert
Mt Albert Bowling Club will also receive funding to improve facilities used by hundreds of members and visitors.
What is being funded?
$60,000 for Mount Albert Bowling Club: converting one of the natural greens to an artificial playing surface.
