Avondale Central Reserve is a step closer to becoming a vibrant new recreational hub, with Whau Local Board approving the concept design for a new playground and upgrades to the surrounding park area yesterday.
The playground will replace and enhance the existing nature play area, with new landscaping, improved path connections, additional green space and a range of new park amenities, like picnic tables and barbecue facilities.
The design will create a cohesive park environment that integrates with the wider Te Hono precinct, which is due for completion in mid-2027.
Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas says it is exciting to see plans for a high-quality playground and upgraded park taking shape alongside Te Hono - Avondale's new library, community hub, and upgraded town square.
“As Avondale continues to grow, it’s important that we continue to invest in quality public spaces where local families can play, connect and enjoy.
“Our community needs high-quality public spaces that meet the needs of all whānau, and this concept plan reflects what the community has told us they need - a welcoming, accessible and inclusive space for everyone.
“With Te Hono’s completion next year, locals will be able to visit the new library and community hub, then enjoy the outdoors at Avondale Central Reserve. It’s great to see these projects coming together to create a vibrant destination for our community.”
The design provides play opportunities for children and young people of different ages and abilities, centred around a large custom play tower as the playground’s main feature.
It includes climbing, swinging, spinning, balancing and agility-based activities, alongside sensory and nature-based play. Water play and informal green spaces for running, ball games and unstructured recreation have also been included following feedback from tamariki and rangatahi.
The existing basketball court and learn-to-ride track will be retained and reconfigured to better integrate with the wider playground.
Other features include accessible pathways, a shared path network, fitness and agility equipment, new tree planting, shade sails, picnic tables and barbecue facilities.
A total budget of $2,759,025.20 has been approved, including $1,459,025.20 from Whau Local Board and $1.3 million from Auckland Council’s Fix and Finish funding.
“The board approved an additional $800,000 in funding earlier this year to help deliver the high-quality playground with a range of great facilities for local families. It’s long overdue, and I’m really pleased to see the concept plan approved. This is a project that means a lot to our community,” says Kay.
The concept design has been developed following investigation, concept development and stakeholder engagement, with input from the local board, community, stakeholders, Whau Youth Board and mana whenua.
