About our city
Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland stretches from the Kaipara Harbour in the north to the Bombay Hills in the south. Auckland Council (Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau) governs the region, home to more than 1.65 million people. Tāmaki Makaurau is Aotearoa New Zealand’s most diverse city, with around 180 ethnic groups and 150+ languages spoken. In 2023, 42% of residents were born overseas, and 37% spoke a language other than English, Māori, or New Zealand Sign Language. The region’s indigenous people are Māori iwi (tribes) and hapū (sub-tribes) with ancestral ties to the land.
