Driving in Auckland

If you’re new to Auckland and planning to drive, it’s important to understand the road rules. This guide covers key driving tips, licence requirements, and practical advice to help you adjust to driving in New Zealand — whether you're commuting, exploring, or getting from A to B.

For information on NZ driver licences and rules of the road, visit the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) or the Automobile Association (AA) website

Top driving tips for newcomers to Auckland

Driver licence

If you have an overseas car driver licence or international driving permit and you’ve been in New Zealand more than 18 months, you need to convert to a NZ driver licence to keep driving here legally. See more information on converting a car licence on NZ Transport Authority (NZTA) or Automobile Association (AA) websites, including in different languages.

If your overseas driver licence or permit is not in English, you will need an accurate English translation. The NZTA website has a list of approved translators and other acceptable options.

Drive on the left

In New Zealand, people always drive on the left side of the road. Take extra care at intersections and roundabouts if you're more familiar with driving on the right.

Understand give way rules

  • Check out these important give way rules which apply at intersections without traffic lights.
  • At roundabouts, give way to traffic coming from your right.

Obey speed limits

  • Urban areas: usually 50 km/h (unless otherwise signposted).
  • Motorways: 80–100 km/h.
  • Watch for signs, as speed limits can change.

Watch for pedestrians and cyclists
Auckland is a walk- and bike-friendly city, so always check for pedestrians at crossings and cyclists in bike lanes. Stop, so they can cross safely.

Be ready for heavy traffic
Rush hours (7–9 AM and 4–6 PM) can cause delays, especially on motorways and in the city centre. Use navigation apps like Google Maps to see congested roads and avoid getting stuck in traffic jams.

Plan parking in advance

  • Parking in the city centre can be limited and expensive. Check Auckland Transport for car parks. Or use private parking apps like Parkable or Wilson Parking to find spots.
  • Watch out for parking signs to avoid fines.

Learn motorway etiquette

  • Stay in the left lane unless overtaking.
  • Use your indicator when changing lanes.

Prepare for changing weather

Auckland's weather can change quickly. Use your headlights in rain or fog and keep a safe following distance in wet conditions.

Be careful on narrow or curvy roads

Roads in rural areas or near beaches can be narrow, with sharp bends. Drive slowly and watch for oncoming vehicles.

Use a GPS or navigation app

  • Apps like Google Maps are helpful for finding the best routes and avoiding road closures.
  • Check for toll roads (e.g., the Northern Gateway) and pay online if needed.

Follow drink-driving laws

New Zealand has strict drink-driving rules. The legal alcohol limit is very low—avoid drinking if you plan to drive.

Stay aware of school zones

Speed limits near schools are often reduced during pick-up and drop-off times. Look for signs to make sure you travel at a safe speed.
