Education

Auckland offers a wide range of education options to support your child’s learning journey - from early childhood through to university. This page provides information about how our education system works, the early childhood education (ECE) services available, and how to choose and enrol in primary or secondary school.

Early childhood education

From the age of three, all children can access up to 20 hours free early childhood education in qualifying pre-schools until they turn five-years-old.

Some early childhood education services offer full immersion in community languages other than English:

  • Kōhanga Reo(full immersion Māori early childhood education). Find a Kōhanga Reo near your home
  • Pacific language nests. Ask your local CAB or church community for a Pacific language early childhood education centre near you
  • Playgroups in diverse community languages exist across Auckland. Check Auckland for Kids and CAB’s community directory.   
  • Safari Multicultural playgroups provides a supportive environment for migrant and former refugee background Mums, including social activities, English classes and educational sessions.

Primary and secondary education

Some public schools offer full or bi-lingual education in community languages other than English:

  • Kura Kaupapa Māori and schools offering full immersion or bilingual education in Māori. Look for a kura (school) near you on the Māori schools directory
  • Schools offering bilingual education in Pacific languages. Look for a school near you on the Pacific School Directory
  • Schools offering bilingual education in other languages. These include:
    • Hindi language: Papatoetoe North School
    • French language: Richmond Road School, Birkdale North School, Kowhai Intermediate School

Community language schools: 

Many community-led or private schools across the city teach children community languages at after-school programmes.  These include for example Hindi, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Korean or French language programmes.
