Get involved and strengthen your community
Connect with your neighbours and get involved in your community by joining local groups, attending events, and volunteering with local community organisations. There are many ways to help improve safety and wellbeing in your area.
Be proactive
Take the first step towards a stronger, more connected community by introducing yourself to your neighbours.
A friendly hello or casual chat goes a long way to help create a sense of belonging and support on your street. Look out for neighbourhood social media groups to find out what’s happening in your area, from events and updates to shared community resources.
You may like to take the lead in bringing people together, by organising a casual get-together or street event. Check out Neighbours Aotearoa for ideas. It’s also a great opportunity to find out if there is a local Neighbourhood Support group, where you can stay connected and help keep your community safe and supported.
There are many ways you can contribute to the wellbeing of your community. Here are a few examples:
- Volunteer at your local school, sports club, library, marae, community centre or place of worship
- join an event, tree planting activity or working bee at your local park or community garden
- find volunteering opportunities in your local community at Volunteering Auckland, Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau or Seek Volunteer
- get actively involved in preventing crime and reducing harm in your area, by being part of your local community patrol
- find out about ambulance membership and medical alarms, learn first aid, and volunteer in your community with St John / Hato Hone
- become a volunteer at your local fire station with Fire Emergency NZ.
