Parks, sports and outdoor activities

There are many, many sports and active recreation opportunities on offer across the city.  From rugby to social walking to waka ama (outrigger canoe racing) to kilikiti (Samoan cricket) to sepak takraw (kick volleyball) to salsa dancing to chair yoga, you can get active in many different ways.

Visit OurAuckland, your local sports clubs, visit a pools and leisure centre,  Google your favourite sport, or check out community notices at your local library, Citizens Advice Bureau or community centre. 

Visit parks and beaches

Auckland has lots of parks with free facilities for the whole family: small and big playgrounds, skate parks, cycle tracks, exercise equipment, sports fields, walking tracks or beaches.

The 14 volcanic cones of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for mana whenua and are cherished by all Aucklanders. Safe swimming and fishing

Swimming or fishing in the ocean, a harbour, a river or a lake is a popular activity during the summer. There are important things to know so you and your family stay safe around water. 

Explore Auckland’s waterways

Auckland is home to many streams, estuaries, basins, and harbours, offering peaceful walking and cycling paths. Each waterway showcases unique landscapes, plants, and wildlife, providing a chance to connect with nature and explore the city’s diverse environment.

Look after the environment

A great way to learn about your neighbourhood and meet new people is to join activities such as:

  • community planting day or a community conservation group
  • events in your local parks, visit OurAuckland and your local board’s Facebook page
  • join a hīkoi (guided walk) to learn about the landscapes around you and their natural, cultural, historical and spiritual values for local communities
  • join outdoor activities in your community, such as walking groups, social sports or community gardens.
  • Participate in a free, community parkrun event near you. These take place every Saturday morning at various locations, where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or watch others cover 5km.
