Voting and child’s play on the North Shore

The North Shore Community Toy Library will combine democracy and child’s play on Friday 4 October.

The charity has signed up to take part in Vote Friday - a local election initiative that will see thousands of Aucklanders offered 30 minutes to fill out their papers at work.

Toy Library President Katrin Hahn says the charity is run by volunteers and has a membership of 164 parents.

“Many of our members are busy mums with young kids or newborns - they’re often very short on time.

“Democratic participation is hugely important, so we’ll be encouraging parents to stop by the Toy Library between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Friday 4 October to fill out their voting papers.”

The Toy Library is one of more than 50 organisations that are currently signed up for Vote Friday.

Participants include Tourism New Zealand, Les Mills, Xero, Farmers, Spark, Vodafone, AUT, AIA, St John, Variety - The Children's Charity, Vodafone, Farmers, Foodstuffs, UniServices, DB, Auckland Museum, Sealord, Athfield Architects, all three Auckland Police Districts, Meredith Connell and the Auckland Business Chamber.

Auckland Council General Manager Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet says, “At least 40 thousand Aucklanders will get the chance to vote at work.

“The enthusiasm and support for Vote Friday has been phenomenal, and we’re encouraging more employers to get on board.”

Organisations can sign up at the elections website, voteauckland.co.nz, or by emailing the Vote Friday team at votefriday@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz
