Whiri Aroha Raranga Whatu

This Matariki, explore a collection of traditional and contemporary garments.

Inspired by the prized representations of their ancestors and taonga woven from pingao, kiekie, kakaho (from toitoi) and muka flax, the Whiri Aroha and Raranga Whatu weavers invite you to visit their display and workshops on Wednesday 19 and 26 June.

Wednesday 19th June workshop is Putiputi, the flax will be harvested from the Botanical Gardens Pa Harakeke and Tukutuku Board, using harvested and prepared Kiekie & Pingao: open to the public, all ages, “to have a go” time is from 10-2pm.

Wednesday 26th June workshop is making a Kupenga(net) ( wall hanger) using harakeke harvested from the Botanical Gardens Pa Harakeke…
Continue with Putiputi & Tukutuku (this is depending on interest from first workshop).

Both workshops will promote/demonstrate “kaitiakitanga” guardianship or correct protocols around the harvesting and care of the pa harakeke.
