Auguste Racinet. Polychromatic ornament. Persian (1877) Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections, 745 R11

Don’t miss a summer display with highlights from James Mackelvie’s library including rare pattern books.

The earliest was published in 1664 focuses on fountains and mazes. The display includes plates from the colourful and wide-ranging Grammar of Ornament (1856) by Owen Jones alongside Auguste Racinet’s Polychromatic ornament (1877).

One of the rare books in the Mackelvie collection is made up of samples of tapa cloth “collected in the three voyages of Captain Cook” published in 1787.

The display will also feature a data show playing digital versions of the complete books.

The Atrium is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 6pm.
