Exposed in the rocky foreshore between Takapuna Beach and Thornes Bay is one of the world's best examples of a fossil forest preserved in a lava flow.
The lava erupted from Lake Pupuke Volcano 200,000 years ago and flowed through the forest, capturing the shapes of hundreds of tree stumps and fallen logs. Geologist Bruce Hayward points out the many highlights of one of Auckland's most spectacular natural features.
