Come along to a free guided bat walk!

Come and join a free guided bat walk at Point View Reserve, Howick, as we explore the hidden nocturnal world of our wonderful native bats (pekāpēka)! Using bat detectors and the fading light of dusk, our experienced guides will help you listen for bat calls and learn how these amazing animals use echolocation to navigate and hunt. This is a family-friendly nature experience designed for all ages.

  • During this walk you’ll:
  • Discover the ecological role of bats in our local environment
  • Learn how to use bat detectors to hear bat echolocation
    Experience the reserve at dusk with an expert guide

This event is a great opportunity to connect with nature and understand more about the wildlife right on our doorstep.

This is a night-time walk and involves navigating tracks in low light conditions. Please note:

  • Children under 15 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
    Wear sturdy footwear and bring a torch (red-light recommended to reduce disturbance).
  • The walk will proceed in dusk/low-light conditions — please bring adequate warm clothing and insect repellent.
  • The event will go ahead in most weather, except in extreme conditions.
  • Paths may be uneven or have tree roots — please take care as you walk.
  • Guides and volunteers will be on hand to assist and keep the group together.
