Join us at the cinema for an evening to celebrate coastal regeneration and seaweed.

Dr Nicole Miller from Explore Your Coast will present her award-winning short film: Seaweed, A Love Story. Documenting Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington’s coastline, it chronicles Nicole’s efforts to inspire action, showcasing the urgent need to monitor and protect these vital ecosystems—essential to life both beneath and above the waves.

Following the presentation, we will dive into more local waters with a kōrero about the kelp regeneration activities currently being undertaken by Waiheke Marine Project.

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion about the future of our underwater forests, so bring your pātai and get ready to bring the beauty of seaweed to the surface!

As you enter the cinema, there will also be an opportunity to browse and purchase some of Nicole’s seaweed art: all profits from art sales support Explore Your Coast.

This event is part of Waiheke Community Cinema’s EcoFest series which explores our connection to the environment. Each one-off Tuesday night screening offers a chance to reflect, learn, and be moved to action—whether it’s rethinking our impact or deepening our appreciation for the planet.

EcoFest is an annual month-long festival taking place Saturday 22 March – Tuesday 22 April 2026. Inspiring climate action across Tāmaki Makaurau, it is hosted in collaboration by EcoMatters, Kaipātiki Project, Beautification Trust and Waiheke Resources Trust, and proudly supported by Auckland Council.
