Against the backdrop of a photographic exhibition, this talk begins by describing what kauri gum is. Māori uses for kauri gum and mythology is discussed before moving on to look at early non Māori contact with kauri gum.

The beginning of the kauri gum industry, through to it becoming one of New Zealand's most important export industries, and through to its eventual disappearance is explored. Life on the gum fields, including an exploration of who was there and why (and who was not there) is discussed, together with the industry's impact on New Zealand today.
