Friday 29 May

Fujfilm NZ hosts Auckland Festival of Photography four key speakers at their new event space, come along meet our feature artists at this Talking Culture special event from 12-1pm. Following this informal mix and mingle opportunity, join a free portfolio review from 1:30-3pm. Bookings essential via email. 

Join us for a Auckland Festival of Photography Talking Culture special event, presented exclusively as part of the Movement [Kori] theme.

Saturday 30 May

  • 11.15am: Talking Culture with Lissa Mitchell: Presentation with Q&A.
    Lissa Mitchell is a photography curator and writer based in Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington where she holds a curatorial role at Te Papa. Lissa is the curator of the major survey exhibition Slow Burn Ahi Tāmau | Women and Photography Māreikura Whakaahua, currently on at Te Papa.

  • 12pm: Talking Culture with Naoko Ohta: Presentation with Q&A.
    Naoko Ohta is president and CEO of Klee, Inc., which provides a wide range of art-related services, including the production of international exhibitions, artist representation, editorial direction, publication of books and photography collection.

  • 1pm: Talking Culture with Hideko Kataoka: Presentation with Q&A.
    Hideko Kataoka is a photo editor, curator and educator. As Director of Photography at Newsweek Japan, she created the 'Picture Power' section, a weekly photojournalism essay that captures underreported topics internationally. She is a mentor, judge and educator for photojournalism.

  • 2pm: Talking Culture with Shen Chao-Liang Presentation with Q&A.
    Shen Chao-Liang career spans photojournalism, professorship roles, and convening the Photo ONE Taipei International Image Art Festival. He is exhibiting at the Festival outdoors, with his award winning 'Stages' series, featuring movement of vehicles unfolding to reveal performance stages in urban and rural parts of Taiwan.

  • 3pm: Talking Culture Panel Discussion: Women Artists and Photographers.
    Join this unique opportunity to hear a panel discussion on women artists, photographers and the career paths in 2026. How can the female gaze can create economic, social and cultural equity, conversation between panelists on their experience, artistic practice, and the politics of inclusion. With Lissa Mitchell (NZ), Naoko Ohta (Japan) and Anna Heath (NZ) plus moderator Janette Dalley.

Sunday 31 May

  • 10.30am - 1.30pm: Talking Culture: Portfolio Reviews.
    New Zealand photographic / visual imaging artists who are keen to take a step internationally and get some professional feedback. We are inviting NZ artists / photojournalists / documentary makers to meet with these esteemed international experts during the daytime for portfolio review meetings.

  • 2pm: Talking Culture Panel Discussion: Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.
    Join this unique opportunity to hear a panel discussion on photojournalism and documentary photography and the key trends in 2026. With Hideko Kataoka, Newsweek (Japan), Shen Chao-Liang (Taiwan), Grzegorz Dąbrowski (Poland), moderated by Janette Dalley (NZ).
