I Was There! celebrates one man’s deep love of live music in Tāmaki Makaurau. This exhibition brings together original gig posters and handwritten set lists from shows attended between 1990 and 1995 - a golden era for New Zealand music fans.
Featuring legendary acts such as The 3Ds, Straightjacket Fits, Able Tasmans, Tall Dwarfs and many more. Each piece is paired with a short personal reflection that captures what it felt like to be in the room on the night.
Curated by longtime gig‑goer Paul Rowe, who has attended hundreds of shows over his lifetime, the exhibition reflects a time when NZ live music was thriving - played loud and late in iconic venues, some of which have since disappeared.
Step back into the 1990s, relive the sweat, noise and moments that mattered. Bring your own musical memories along and reconnect with the gigs this May.
