Matariki is a time to celebrate with kai (food), gather, and reflect on te taiao (the environment), making it a perfect opportunity to practice sustainability by reducing food waste.
Join Wei for this Love Food Hate Waste - Matariki whānau friendly workshop. Bring a few vegetarian soup ingredients such as herbs, garden produce, or simply veges in your fridge that are edible, just looking a bit tired. Together we will make a warm hearty soup to share.
We will be learning about each whetu (star) and āna tohu mō te taiao (their signs for the enviornment); reflecting te matauranga o te kai (the knowledge of food) we have learned from our tūpuna (ancestors). Practical advice about how to be creative with your fresh food and leftovers will be given, to help them last longer. Making the most of the food we have helps save money and is better for the environment. We will play a few games and sing waiata together to consolidate our learning.
Please note that this whānau-friendly activity is for tamariki over ten years old with adult or caregiver supervision. Each child must be accompanied by at least one adult.
This is a hands-on activity. Please bring your chopping board, knife and your taste buds along. Please inform wei@ecomatters.org.nz if any food allergies need to be accommodated.
Thank you to Compost Collective and EcoMatters for facilitating this workshop and Mānawa Maiea a Matariki for supporting!
