Before the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the subsequent growth in housing, there were market gardens, strawberry patches, orchards and dairy farms throughout the Birkenhead area.
The Birkenhead Museum has display items related to the farming and kauri gum digging activities in the area. There are also old maps, early aerial photographs, kitchen implements, recipe books, tools, surveying equipment etc.
