Response 56 Rationing 1939 1950 The Household Experience

For families living in New Zealand during the mid-20th century, the impacts of global conflict were felt at the kitchen table. Domestic rationing began as early as 1939 and remarkably was not fully lifted until 1950, meaning that everyday households had to manage under strict limitations for over a decade.

In this presentation, Lynley Stone from the Mt Albert Historical Society looks closely at the items that were rationed - and places these restrictions within the broader context of the war effort, the economy, and the social conditions of the time.

Following the talk, morning tea will be provided.
