The Auckland Public Library has its own story of civic participation and community development. This fascinating presentation by Star Jackson explores the eras that shaped the institution and how its social importance has evolved to meet the needs of Aucklanders.
The journey begins in the 19th century, when the library was housed within the early Mechanics Institute. The talk then moves to the challenging years of the Second World War, when the community recognised the library as an essential public resource. This culminated in the introduction of a free lending service in 1946. The presentation concludes with the planning and development that led to the opening of the current central city library building in 1971. Additionally, Star has conducted extra research on the history of the Titirangi Library and will present these local findings as part of the session.
