Publish Date : 10 Dec 2024

Embark on a literary adventure from the comfort of your favourite reading spot this summer with Auckland Council Libraries Top 100 Reads of 2024.

The carefully curated books in the Top 100 list invite readers to discover new places and cultures and explore diverse eras and perspectives.

Auckland Council’s Head of Library and Learning Services Catherine Leonard believes each of the recommended reads offers Aucklanders something extra-ordinary.

“Books have a unique ability to transport us to other places, whether it’s in the real or imagined past, or in an unknown future. Our Top 100 selection of books offers a window into a wide variety of cultures and experiences,” Catherine says.

The eagerly anticipated annual list of 100 titles has been handpicked by Auckland Council librarians from books published in 2024 with ten books in each of the following categories:

  • Fiction

  • book club picks

  • beach reads

  • books in translation

  • non-fiction

  • illustrated non-fiction

  • graphics for all ages

  • life and times

  • for teens, and

  • for kids.

The must-read fiction books cover a mix of genres, including literary fiction, drama, romance, fantasy, crime, adventure, and books translated into English.

This year's non-fiction books cover the most talked about topics, including climate change, protest art, gender rebellion, radical living, independent bookshops, indigenous music, van life, and biographies and memoirs of beloved New Zealanders.

In total, the Top 100 features 26 titles by authors from Aotearoa, and of these, nine are authors from Tāmaki Makaurau.
