Angels shine a light on Tāmaki Makaurau this Christmas

Publish Date : 28 Nov 2025

Auckland Council staff are digging deep this year to bring a little Christmas cheer to Aucklanders struggling to make ends meet in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Donations from staff are currently being collected in council offices for the Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai Auckland Angels appeal.

Aucklanders can also get on board to support the cause in the next three weeks, by dropping long-life food or gifts off at any Auckland Council library branch throughout the region.

Each donation will help to create Christmas meal packs for families in need, gifts for children that match their age and interests, and a festive treat for those experiencing homelessness, in transitional housing or living at the Mission’s HomeGround.

With support from the council’s collections last year, Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai gave out 30,000 gifts to tamariki, and 7000 families were able to enjoy a Christmas meal.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says that while he looks forward to the festive season, he’s always mindful that it’s a challenging time of year for anyone without the support of friends or family close by, and those struggling to make ends meet.

“Any contribution through this appeal, big or small, is likely to brighten someone’s day. I’m more than willing to dig deep for the collection box this year and I encourage everyone who can to do the same. Let’s help to share a little kindness to people who are doing it tough.”

The council has supported Te Tāpui Atawhai Auckland Angels appeal for six years, and continues to support Auckland City Mission to respond to homelessness in Auckland.

General Manager of Community Wellbeing Kenneth Aiolupotea says his team is proud to be working closely with City Mission to make this happen.

“It is great that our libraries are places where our community can make donations to support people in need for Christmas. The cool thing about this appeal is that anyone can be an angel, everyone needs an angel and every donation counts.”

Auckland City Missioner – Manutaki Helen Robinson says the appeal offers meaningful support for many and can give hope to those finding daily living expenses impossible to meet.

“It’s always heartening to see how generous and thoughtful people can be, when it comes to extending care and kindness beyond their close contacts. Every donation helps and we are forever grateful to everyone who takes the time to do so.

“A big thank you to Auckland Council for supporting the Mission again this Christmas, by making it easy for Aucklanders across the region to donate.”
