Hawkins Theatre celebrated its 25th birthday in August 2015.
To mark the occasion, the theatre held an open day for the community. Free family film screenings, drama workshops and tours of the building provided a chance to see what goes on backstage and in the technical areas.
The theatre was built in 1990 by the former Papakura District Council, and is named after George Hawkins, who was mayor of Papakura at the time. Mr Hawkins saw the development of a performing arts venue as vital to a thriving local community.
Papakura Local Board member Katrina Winn says, “Hawkins Theatre is a jewel in the crown of Papakura and a huge asset. Celebrating 25 years since opening is the perfect time to acknowledge the contribution of many performing arts groups in our community who continue to add significant value to our residents, and attract others to our town.”
