Construction of the new Matakana Village playground is well underway.
Earthworks, engineering and retaining walls are complete, and play equipment and furniture is being installed.
A mega pendulum swing, giant stainless steel slide and a climbing module will feature in the playground. Fruit trees and other vegetation will be planted shortly.
Design for the playground was agreed after robust community consultation. This involved the Matakana Community Group, focus groups with Matakana school children, youth engagement assisted by the Rodney Youth Advisory Panel, as well as resident feedback at a community drop-in session last year.
Rodney Local Board member Beth Houlbrooke says the local board is pleased with the playground’s progress.
“We have local contractors who are demonstrating a real passion for delivering a high-quality community playground,” she says.
“The playground has been specifically designed to enhance the grassed bank in the reserve, and it also reflects unique elements of Matakana’s history.”
Matakana playground is expected to be finished and ready for use in late July.
