The $2.7 million project, which will upgrade the mall between Grey Street and Arthur Street, is a priority in the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Plan 2014, and received strong support from the wider community during recent consultation.
The upgrade aims to boost foot traffic and economic activity by improving the street environment, reducing the speed of passing traffic and providing safer places for pedestrians to cross the road. Features include new footpath surfaces, new built-out kerbs, street furniture, raised pedestrian crossings, new trees along the street and improvements to the roundabout on Arthur Street.
The project also includes a cycle lane on the western side of the Mall, mid‑block signalised pedestrian crossing and new streetlights.
As part of the construction, 11 car park spaces will be removed. Parking time restrictions will remain as P30.
The design has been fine-tuned following feedback from the local board, key stakeholders and from the public at information events.
The lower mall was last upgraded in 1998 and the new design introduces more contemporary elements.
Work will be completed in November, with disruption minimised whenever possible.
