Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board’s environmental focus is making a significant contribution to the work of the Manukau Harbour Forum.

The forum comprises representatives from nine local boards, and is implementing a range of actions to support and restore the harbour.

“Protecting and enhancing our environment underpins our local board’s plans for the next decade and beyond,” says Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board member Bridget Graham, who is on the forum. “By working with other local boards, we’re gaining good momentum with environmental project planning and implementation.”

Important projects funded by the local board include a pollution-prevention programme, working with industry and businesses to reduce potential impact on local waterways.

The board has assisted the Water-Sensitive Onehunga Project with improving water quality in Māngere Inlet, the Arthur Street Restoration Project, and the provision of tetra traps in shopping areas to capture litter before it enters the stormwater system.

Much improved accessibility to the harbour will be a key benefit from the Onehunga Foreshore Restoration project, with newly created parkland and beaches open to the public in time for summer.
