The transformation of Zion Hill Reserve into an attractive gateway park for Birkenhead town centre starts this month.
The project will begin with excavation and the construction of concrete steps and paths. Decorative screens and seating will then be installed, and trees will be planted.
The project is due to be completed in late November.
Kaipātiki Local Board Chair Kay McIntyre says the upgraded reserve will make a welcoming gateway to Birkenhead town centre.
“Until recently, few even knew it existed, and soon it will become an attractive and highly visible focal point for people entering and exiting the town centre."
“This is one of a number of projects set to get underway which will have a large and positive impact on Birkenhead.”
A public artwork is also planned for the reserve. Kaipātiki Public Arts Trust is in discussions with an artist, and once a design has been approved the trust will fundraise for its construction.
