Beach Haven has a vibrant new community space in the heart of the village, inhabiting the site where the old post office building once stood.
Features of the new space include a paved area with picnic tables, an oval lawn, a small stage for performances, a timber boardwalk, community gardens and a nautical-themed children’s playground.
“The Beach Haven Placemaking Group has done its community proud,” says Kaipātiki Local Board Chair Kay McIntyre.
“They’ve been the driving force behind this project and are responsible for its fantastic final design. The connection to the Waitematā Harbour, the surrounding bays and the fishing wharf are integral to the area’s identity, and this is all reflected in the design.”
Mana whenua provided input into the design. This is seen in five carved pouwhenua and in the patterns in the boardwalk, planter boxes and paving. The artworks reflect the natural elements and connection to the harbour with its plentiful resources, as well as themes of food cultivation and people coming together through community gardening.
