The Albert-Eden community now has a double flying fox at the Mt Albert Recreational Reserve in Wairere Avenue.
Albert-Eden Local Board is committed to increasing recreational opportunities in the reserve, and in 2013 consulted the community, neighbours and young people about the improvements they wanted.
In 2014, the board celebrated the re-opening of the rocket in the Rocket Park section of the reserve. Stage one of the upgrade completed improvements to the path network behind the YMCA, and added furniture, barbecues and gardens to the reserve.
Now stage two is open and local children were invited to be the first to use the flying fox, along with Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward Councillor Cathy Casey and some adventurous local board members.
“The northern end of the reserve behind the Mt Albert Community Centre was not used as much as it should be,” says local board member and planning portfolio holder Graeme Easte.
“The topography in the park was ideal for a new pair of flying foxes. We hope this will bring parents and children into the northern part of the park to enjoy tennis and table tennis, as well as the flying fox.”
