Some of Auckland’s many innovative businesses and individuals have shone at the 2015 New Zealand Innovators Awards, winning 11 out of a possible 18 awards.
The awards, which were held at The Cloud in Auckland on 22 October, aim to recognise and celebrate innovative, high-growth New Zealand organisations.
Auckland-based Kode Biotech was crowned Supreme New Zealand Innovator for its game-changing Kode Technology Anti-Cancer Treatment.
Kode Biotech – which also won the Innovation in Health & Science category – has focused on the development of cell surface membrane modification technology in the fight against tumours.
Other winners included Genevieve’s, which started out as a boutique paté maker at La Cigale French Market in Parnell in 2011, claiming the Innovation in Food & Beverage category for its long-shelf-life patés.
Weirdly – a digital start-up company based in the GridAKL innovation precinct in Wynyard Quarter, which is delivered by Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED) on behalf of Auckland Council – was named as Emerging New Zealand Innovator.
Patrick McVeigh, General Manager Business, Innovation & Skills at ATEED, says the success of Auckland businesses at the awards is a reminder of Auckland’s innovative potential.
“Congratulations to all Auckland companies that won awards last night, all of which are brilliant examples of the level of innovative talent we have in our region.
“Creating a culture of innovation across Auckland is vital to Auckland's economic transformation, and a major focus for ATEED, Auckland Council, and our local boards.
“We want Auckland to become known as a hub for innovation in the Asia-Pacific region, and having companies of this calibre calling Auckland home is an important part of achieving this goal.”
