Ōtara’s new high-tech basketball court in Otamariki Park was recently opened with a community-led minibasketball tournament.

‘The Jungle’ court was funded and built by Spark NZ as part of its regional Spark Boroughs project, with support from Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and the Jungle Steering Group, a community support group.

Local board chair Fa'anānā Efeso Collins says the project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when business, the council and members of the community work together for real outcomes.

“Spark’s initial investment has really inspired a future vision for the community that extends far beyond this court,” he says. “We’re proud to have helped bring this together."

“The Jungle Steering Group now has plans to help Spark activate the court in ways that strengthen community bonds and provide disengaged youth with mentors, encouragement and something awesome to look forward to.”

The Jungle Steering Group is made up of local representatives including the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, the Ōtara Business Association, local healthcare providers, schools, musicians, and outreach programmes.
