Volunteers and various community groups were officially congratulated and celebrated at the Papakura Local Board Volunteer Awards ceremony, held recently at Hawkins Theatre.
Papakura Local Board Chair Bill McEntee says the awards were a chance for the community to acknowledge and thank local volunteers and stalwarts for their tireless work.
“Whether it is a helpful neighbour, a sports coach, someone looking after our environment, or a local organisation, we want to acknowledge their efforts because Papakura just wouldn’t be the same without them.”
Award-winners came from a broad range of organisations, and included volunteer coastguards, a karate sensei, a security guard and charity shop volunteers.
Bruce Young was nominated for his work with Framework Trust, helping those with mental illness re-engage with work and the community.
“We all know someone who works tirelessly lending a helping hand and never asks anything in return,” says Bill McEntee. “This is their time to shine.”
