Safer streets in Orākei

Orākei Local Board has successfully advocated for Auckland Transport to install a fence between the road and the footpath on Abbotts Way in Remuera, providing a safer environment for residents at the Edmund Hillary Retirement Village.

Funding for the project came from the discretionary capital fund available to the board.

“Safety for residents is the driver for this project, especially since many of them have been ratepayers in the Orākei Local Board area for years,” says board member and transport portfolio lead Ken Baguley.

Former Kohimarama resident Laurie Campbell, who now lives at the retirement village with his wife, Shirley, has been campaigning for a barrier along the street for more than three years.

He says he’s pleased with the new fence, and thanks Orākei Local Board for its involvement.
