Where can you find iconic volcanic cones nestled among some of Auckland’s finest built heritage, sporting greatness and thriving restaurant culture?
Drawing its name from two maunga within its boundaries, Owairaka-Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura-Mount Albert and Mangawhau-Mt Eden, the Albert-Eden Local Board area is also home to more than 100 parks and Eden Park, the scene of many important rugby and cricket victories.
Te Kopūke-Titikopuke-Mt St John (Epsom) is the board area’s third and little-known volcanic cone and is something of a hidden gem.
“There are so many wonderful things about our local area – we’re lucky to have such a wealth of heritage, both in natural and built features, so close to the central city. There are more than 100 parks, many upgraded playgrounds and our vibrant food and arts scenes have something for every taste,” says Albert-Eden Local Board Chair Peter Haynes.
“Our town and village centres draw in visitors from all over Auckland with their unique identities and diverse communities. As a board, we are working to revitalise and upgrade our town centres to future-proof them and ensure that they remain vibrant.”
A short drive can take you from the wooded slopes of Maungawhau-Mt Eden to the sandy shores of Point Chevalier Beach.
Those wanting to cool off in the hot weather can also head to the Potters Park Splash Pad in Balmoral, which is the perfect place to take youngsters for a wet and wild outing.
Some of the key projects the board has underway include an upgrade of the Point Chevalier Library Square, the redevelopment of Potters Park, a masterplan for the redevelopment of Chamberlain Park and the upcoming upgrade of the Mount Albert town centre.
Suburbs include: Point Chevalier, Waterview, Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Kingsland, Balmoral, Epsom and Greenlane.
Albert-Eden population: 94,695 people or seven per cent of Aucklanders (2013 census).

- Check out the fantastic upgraded playground at Rocket Park and go for a ride on the new double flying fox at the Mt Albert Recreational Reserve behind the Mt Albert YMCA.
- Check out the view from the area’s main volcanic cones.
- Explore places of historical interest in the board area with heritage walks - Balmoral and Sandringham, Mt Eden/Maungawhau, Owairaka/Mt Albert
- Take your fish and chips down to Point Chevalier beach in the summer and check out the fantastic playground at neighbouring Coyle Park.
